Sassari - Cement Plant
This industrial masterpiece was built between 1954 and 1956 and inaugurated on april 1957. At the time it was one of the largest in Europe.
During the '60s the production was 350tons for a day thanks to the three huge circular klins, and employed over 250 workers.
Starting in the middle '70s, the new cement plant in Samatza (south Sardegna) weakened the strongness of Sassari cement plant.
The '80s and '90s are characterized by high and low performance.
With the new millennium start the final crisis. After a long battle between workers unions and property the cement plant close. Italcementi prefer to invest all the resources for Sardegna in Samatza, so this condemn Sassari.
The cement plant has definitively closed in october 2010.
Actually there is a debate for the future of the area. One the most serious proposal is the complete demolition of the factory (but just over my dead body!).
