Hoisting the bin
The remarkable feature of this picture is that it shows an activity which could have been taken on the day the building was opened in 1885.
This is a textile mill in Long Eaton, near Nottingham. When built it was intended for use by small firms, who could rent part of the building but make use of the advantage of a central power supply - originally of course provided by line-shafting driven by a central steam engine. Of course at that time there would not have been the luxury of an electric hoist; it would probably have been manually operated although it might might have had a take-off from the line-shafting.
The mill has been renovated in recent years, but as part of a conservation area, this has been very sympathetically carried out so the building still functions more or less as originally intended. Even some of the occupiers are still connected with the textile industry!
