Lynemouth Power Station
One of the smallest coal-fired power stations still operating in the UK, with a capacity of 420MW, it was built in 1972 by Alcan to provide power for their new aluminium smelter, opened the same year. It is said to be the most thermally-efficient coal-fired station in the UK, and in addition uses a proportion of biomass in its fuel.
This view shows the power lines exiting to the smelter. The output is at the relatively low voltage of 24Kv, as this meets the smelter's requirements and the transmission distance is very short. Excess capacity can be used to feed into the National Grid for which the tension is transformed up to 132Kv.
