SNIA Viscosa - Varedo skyline
Skyline of the former SNIA Viscosa man-made fibers factory in Varedo, near Milan. The site, covering more than 50 hectares, was a major European plant in its kind, producing both artificial (regenerated cellulose) and synthetic (polymers oil-derived) fibre, plus auxiliary chemicals and power supply. Built in 1922, it was reconstructed in the mid 30s and enlarged until 1960 along the same architectonic style. Artificial fibre production (mainly viscose rayon yarn, staple and cord) ceased in 1982, while synthetics (nylon and polyester) in 2004.

In the picture we can recognize, left to right: the short chimney of the former carbon disulphide facility (demolished a while ago), synthetic fibre spinning plant partially still intact, the impressive chimney of the rayon continuous spinning, the trapezoid roof of sodium sulfate recovery plant, the massive size of power plant n.2, then the chimney of power plant n.1 which stands a bit more on the right, in the background the tall chimney of power plant n.3, then viscose preparation plant in the background, the tallest chimney of the factory (rayon staple plant central smokestack) and on the extreme right, in the background, the vertical cord building.
