Sanyelan smelter - Baiyin
Part of the Sanyelan lead-zinc smelter complex of the Baiyin Nonferrous Metals Co in Gansu Province in central China. The Baiyin Company is officially known as 'Factory 805' and was established in 1954. It controls the lives and work of nearly everyone in the area with around 400,000 employees. There are three deep mines in the area; two lead/zinc and one copper with four smelters and two concentrators. Ore is brought from the lead mines by an aerial ropeway. The mines and this smelter are located in a mountainous area to the north of Baiyin city where the air is normally very polluted and visibility is poor. On this day after snowfall the air was unusually clear.
