Harboro silica brickworks
|
The limestone uplands around Brassington, Derbyshire, are notable for the occurrence of subsidence hollows caused by differential dissolution of the dolomite rocks beneath. These hollows subsequently filled with river-borne sediments of silica sands which have been exploited for many years for the manufacture of refractory bricks for furnace linings.
Harboro brickworks was established in the early twentieth century but now uses imported materials as the original source is exhausted. The rural location of the modern works can be clearly seen.
