INA, Rijeka
The oil refinery of Rijeka is among the oldest in Europe. It was opened in 1883 by the Shale Oil Refinery Company of Pest and became soon one of the most important in the Kingdom of Hungary, supplying 30% of the need for petroleum products. Oil was imported from USA, Russia and Galicia.
After WWI Rijeka became an Italian city and the refinery was managed by an Hungarian-Italian joint-venture called ROMSA (Raffineria di Olii Minerali Società Anonima), taken over in 1926 by the recently founded, State-owned company for the development of the oil industry, AGIP. The Rijeka's refinery was considered by the Fascist regime the core of a future strong Italian oil industry and further improved, both technically and aesthetically with the construction of a typical rationalist administration building.
After the WWII defeat Rijeka was a part of the Yugoslavian State, which became owner of ROMSA and named the plant "Boris Kidri Oil Refinery Rijeka" in 1953. 10 years later the construction of a large, modern oil refinery in nearby Urinj began and went operational in 1967 under the State holding INA (Industrija NAfte - Oil Industry). Then the Rijeka unit started to decline in favour of the new plant, neverthless it operated until 2004.
Today only the administration building is still used by INA, while the production plant has been idled but not yet demolished.
