Small mine at Fuli, Hegang

This is rather like the 'Where's Wally' series of images for children where there is so much to spot in a cluttered image. In this case a view from April 2005 taken in the far north of China not far from the border with Russia. A typical Chinese small, probably unlicensed, mine of which there must be many thousands across the country. A drift mine with the entrance below the three red flags just to the left of centre. Full tubs are wound up the slope towards the other two red flags and are then run back onto the rather rickety staging above the simple screening arrangements. Two men can be seen balanced above the screens undertaking the rather risky business of tipping tubs. The usual paraphernalia of a pit yard occupies the foreground.
