A quiet early morning scene at the Jalainur opencast mine, Mongolian Autonomous Region. The seam being worked is about 10m thick. Only spoil is brought right out of the pit by rail. Coal is unloaded onto a conveyor in a building in the pit below the train in the foreground. From there it is taken to the washery situated behind the photographer.
