Neukircher Mühle, Essen-Werden
On Hardenberg riverside in Essen-Werden is one of the few remaining factory buildings from the 19th century, the Neukirch mill, which was built in the so-called "round arch style". The origin of the surviving house is related to the recent expansion of the Neukirch lock in 1842 and 1844. The main building with its five double window axes was the reconstruction in 1900 after the fire of the old mill building. The plan clearly shows the two construction phases as two staggered, almost square parts of the building. Towards the Ruhr, a crenellated tower towers over the roof and gives the mill a castle-like character. The name "White Mill" was given to this grain mill because of the white lime mud, under which the brickwork is still clearly visible. (not at the photo)
